A Housing Project: Before and After

Every time Mary* had to use the bathroom, it was a nerve-wracking affair. It meant going outside and trying to find a private place where there were no private places. It meant being vulnerable to embarassment and attack. Mary had no bathroom in her house at all, and had to use a hole in the ground outside in the open air.

Some of Mary's three sisters even developed painful medical conditions from having to refrain from using the bathroom because of their fear of being exposed outside, the only bathroom they had.

Then, a generous contributor helped Coptic Orphans supply badly needed sewage lines to Mary's house, and build a working bathroom.

Mary's house before... merely a niche under the stairs before the new bathroom was built. Mary's new bathroom! It works, too.
